21.1 Staking Requirements

RandProof employs a low-stake, high-decentralization model. Unlike traditional Proof-of-Stake systems where staking secures consensus, RandProof’s security is guaranteed by fifteen independent entropy sources (DRAND, NIST, Chain-Native VRF, Commit-Reveal, Block Timestamp, and ten more -- see Section 3.3). Node staking serves primarily as sybil resistance and skin-in-the-game for honest behavior, not as the primary security mechanism.

Staking Philosophy: Lower barriers to entry maximize decentralization while maintaining economic security through:

  • Sybil attack deterrence: Cost to create many fake nodes remains non-trivial

  • Slashing penalties: 100% stake loss for misbehavior (double-signing, offline nodes)

  • Multi-layer security: 15 entropy sources make node-level attacks irrelevant

Note: Stake amounts are calibrated to balance decentralization (maximizing node count) with sybil resistance (deterring fake nodes). The 15 entropy sources provide the actual security guarantee, making node-level attacks economically irrational regardless of stake size. Minimum stakes are calibrated so that no chain's USD-equivalent floor falls materially below ~$20 (the assumption used in the Sybil-cost analysis, Section 23.2.2); quantities are repriced if sustained price movement pushes any chain outside the $20-60 band.
